A motorist who stopped to help out another driver with a disabled vehicle was struck and killed on the Lodge freeway, according to state police.
The incident happened about 11:40 p.m. Saturday Oct. 3 when two vehicles crashed on southbound M-10 near Nine Mile Road, Michigan State Police said in a news release.
Police said the initial crash left one of the vehicles disabled and blocking the left two lanes of the freeway.
A few minutes later, according to police, a passing motorist stopped on the right shoulder, got out of their vehicle and crossed the freeway in an attempt to assist those involved in the crash.
“While the motorist was providing assistance, another vehicle approaching the disabled vehicle swerved in an attempt to avoid it and struck the pedestrian,” MSP said in the release.
State troopers, Southfield Police and Southfield Fire/EMS began providing lifesaving efforts, including CPR, but the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Police did not provide the name, age, or residence of the victim.
Troopers said the driver who struck the pedestrian remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. There were no immediate indications that alcohol or drugs were a factor.
The freeway was closed for about four hours to allow troopers to conduct their investigation and reopened at approximately 4:30 a.m.
