(FOX 5/KUSI) — A man died after being involved in a crash while helping his daughter with her disabled vehicle on the I-15 in San Diego early Monday morning, which ultimately led to several other crashes and prompted the full closure of the northbound lanes for several hours.
A California Highway Patrol sergeant said the crash was one in a series that happened in the northbound lanes near Clairemont-Mesa Blvd. around 3:30 a.m. and involved several vehicles.
Sergeant Ray Scheidnes said that it started with a disabled vehicle stopped in the center divider. A woman was driving the vehicle, and it had several children inside.
The woman called her father, a man in his 60s, who arrived to help in a minivan. While helping, the minivan was broadsided on the driver’s side by a Toyota Corolla, killing the man.
Scheidnes said that officers were investigating what position the minivan was facing before it was broadsided.
The Corolla was then hit in the back by a fourth vehicle, and then a fifth vehicle sideswiped either the Corolla or the fourth vehicle.
Scheidnes said that the woman and children in the disabled vehicle were uninjured, and that the driver of the Corolla and the driver of the fourth vehicle were taken to the hospital with various injuries.
The driver of the fifth vehicle was uninjured and was able to drive their vehicle from the scene.
Scheidnes said that all lanes of northbound I-15 will be closed for several hours, since there is debris scattered across all lanes.
