1 dead, 1 injured after car hits them outside broken down vehicle on Route 18 in New Bedford

A 23-year-old was killed, and a second person was hospitalized with critical injuries after they were struck by a car while walking away from their broken down vehicle on Route 18 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, on Friday night.

The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office announced that Ruby Quiro Santos, of New Bedford, died from her injuries following the crash that occurred around 9:15 p.m. on Route 18 northbound, north of the Hillman Street onramp. Several others were taken to the hospital following the multi-car crash.

An investigation by Massachusetts State Police shows Santos was driving a Toyota Camry on Route 18 when her car became disabled in the left lane, where there was partially snow, officials said.

A second vehicle, an Audi A4, with multiple people inside arrived on scene to help Santos, as did two New Bedford police Ford Explorers, both fully marked with their lights engaged to alert drivers passing by the broken down car.

As Santos and a second female were walking to the Audi, a Honda Accord struck them outside of the vehicle, also hitting the Audi and one of the marked police vehicles, officials said.

All people involved in the crash were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Santos died from her injuries on Saturday. The other female who was hit outside of the vehicle is in critical but stable condition. Everyone else either suffered minor injuries, or is expected to recover from any injuries sustained.

Officials have not released any information on the Accord driver, or said if they’ll face any charges in the deadly crash. Further details were not immediately available.

Massachusetts State Police and the district attorney’s office are investigating.
