Driver killed in fiery crash at I-66 rest area in Northern Virginia

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. (7News) — A driver was killed Saturday afternoon after crashing into a parked 18-wheeler at an Interstate rest area in Manassas, according to Virginia State Police.

The crash happened around 3:13 p.m. on Feb. 28 at the eastbound I-66 rest stop near the 49-mile marker.

VSP officials said preliminary findings showed a Toyota sedan struck the back of a legally parked tractor-trailer. After the impact, the sedan burst into flames.

The driver of the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released the victim’s name pending notification of next of kin.

State police said the driver of the 18-wheeler was resting inside the cab at the time of the crash and was not hurt.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
