Driver seriously injured after slamming into semi on I-80/94, Indiana State Police say

GARY, Ind. (WLS) – A driver was seriously injured after crashing into a parked semi in northwest Indiana on Tuesday, according to Indiana State Police.

The crash happened at about 7:40 a.m. on the westbound lanes of I-80/94 between Burr Street and Cline Avenue in Gary, police said.

Chopper 7 was over the scene at 8:30 a.m.

Police said the driver of a blue 1999 GMC Yukon was traveling on the right shoulder when it crashed into a disabled 2016 Freightliner.

The semi was on the right shoulder due to a mechanical failure, police said.

Indiana State Police said the semi driver had emergency warning triangles properly deployed behind the trailer.

The Gary Fire Department helped to extricate the Yukon driver from the vehicle.

Indiana State Police confirmed that the injuries in the crash were “extremely serious.”

The driver was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital for treatment via a helicopter.

All lanes reopened by 10:15 a.m. Traffic on I-80/94 was backed up from I-65 to the scene as crews investigated.
