Man killed while clearing snow off his car on Mass. Pike. What to know

A Connecticut man was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer late Monday night, Feb. 24, as he was clearing snow off his car on the side of the Massachusetts Turnpike, authorities said.

Massachusetts State Police identified the victim as Patrick Sarpong, 35, of Vernon, Connecticut.

According to an email from Trooper Leah O’Connell, Sarpong had pulled over on the side of the Mass. Pike westbound, near mile marker 104.6 in Hopkinton, to clear snow off his vehicle. He was struck at about 11:15 p.m.

Sarpong was transported to an area hospital after the crash but died, O’Connell said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer has not been identified and has not been charged. The crash remains under investigation.

Monday’s blizzard kept state police busy. They say troopers assisted more than 500 disabled vehicles during the storm.
