Tampa man, 19, killed in I-75 vehicle crash in Sumter County

A 19-year-old Tampa man died in a pre-dawn vehicle crash Feb. 1 on Interstate 75 in Sumter County.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol news release, the man was southbound on I-75, driving a Honda Accord, when he struck the back of a semitractor truck with no trailer that was stopped along the emergency shoulder after experiencing mechanical issues.

For unknown reasons, the release says, the Tampa man entered the shoulder and struck the truck.

The truck driver, a 35-year-old Rhode Island man, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital.

The crash happened at 5:18 a.m. near the Lake Panasoffkee (Sumter County Road 470) interchange, according to FHP.
