2 killed, 2 injured in multi-vehicle crashes on 10 Freeway in Ontario

ONTARIO, Calif. - Two people were killed, and two others were injured following two crashes on the 10 Freeway overnight in Ontario, authorities said.

What we know:

California Highway Patrol officials said the crashes were reported just before midnight Sunday on the westbound side of the freeway near the Fourth Street exit.

Officials said in the first crash, a vehicle crashed with a disabled car that was parked on the right shoulder. As drivers slowed down, a big rig triggered a chain-reaction crash involving multiple vehicles, including the two cars involved in the initial crash.

A witness told the CHP that a big rig crashed into vehicles and “split one of the vehicles in half.”

Officials said the first fatality occurred when a passenger was hit by a big rig in the second crash. The second fatality happened when the driver from the first crash got out of her car and was struck and killed on the roadway.

All westbound lanes were closed in the area by 12:08 a.m. Monday and reopened before 6 a.m.

What we don’t know:

The names of the crash victims have not been released and the cause of the crashes are under investigation.
