Attempted hit-and-run collision on I-5 near SeaTac leaves 72-year-old Kent woman dead

SEATTLE — A deadly collision shut down southbound lanes of Interstate 5 for multiple hours early Sunday morning near SeaTac.

According to the Washington State Patrol, a vehicle traveling in lane two struck another vehicle in lane one before leaving the scene. The second vehicle became disabled and ended up perpendicular to the roadway. Moments later, a third vehicle collided with the disabled vehicle.

Authorities said a 72-year-old woman from Kent was driving the second vehicle and died at the scene. She was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt. A 26-year-old man from Olympia who was driving the third vehicle was injured and transported to the hospital. The age and identity of the driver of the first vehicle is not known.

Officials reported at 3:30 a.m. that all southbound lanes of I-5 at South 200th Street (milepost 151) were blocked due to a collision involving two vehicles. Traffic was diverted off the freeway at the South 200th Street exit while emergency crews worked at the scene.

According to Puget Sound Fire, the first report came in at about 3:23 a.m. and multiple first responders responded to the scene, including firefighters, paramedics, and an ambulance.

The cause of the collision is under investigation.

All lanes reopened around 7:30 a.m.
