Driver killed while inspecting vehicle after crash on I-40

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A 29-year-old man was killed while he was inspecting his vehicle after a crash on Interstate 40 Sunday morning.

The crash happened in the westbound lanes near the Hermitage Avenue exit in downtown Nashville around 3:30 a.m.

According to Metro police, the driver of a Dodge Journey initially rear-ended a Nissan van and the vehicles became disabled. The driver of the Nissan pulled off to the right shoulder while the driver of the Dodge pulled off to the far left lane.

The driver of the Dodge, later identified as Darius Woods, was outside of the vehicle and inspecting for damage when he was hit by an Acura MDX.

Woods was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died. The 46-year-old driver of the Acura was also transported to Vanderbilt with critical injuries. It is not known if the driver of the Nissan was injured in the crash.

No additional information was immediately released.
