Driver who stopped to help with flat tire struck by car on N.J. highway

A driver who stopped on Route 21 in Essex County to help another motorist early Tuesday was struck and critically injured by a passing vehicle, police said.

The man pulled over about 4 a.m. in the southbound lanes near Exit 8 in Nutley, according to Police Chief Thomas J. Strumolo.

“The person stopped on the side of the highway and was crossing the road to assist a motorist with a flat tire and was struck by the vehicle,” Strumolo said.

The injured man was taken to University Hospital in Newark, where he was in critical condition, the chief said.

The driver who struck the man remained at the scene and has not been charged. The incident is under investigation.
