Webster man dies on SR 48 after trying to reconnect tow-strapped car

A tragic sequence of events led to the death of a 73-year-old Webster man on the section of State Road 48 known as West Belt Street, in Bushnell.

The Webster man was driving a Silverado and had tethered a Toyota RAV4 to the back of his truck with a tow-strap.

The RAV4, which had a driver and passenger inside, separated and rolled into traffic while the Silverado was heading eastbound on the Sumter County road.

When the truck driver circled back toward the RAV4, he left his car and crawled underneath the SUV to try to reconnect it to his truck. During that time, a Bushnell man, 54, collided with the rear of the RAV4. The impact of his Audi A5 caused the Toyota to lurch forward over the Webster man and crash into the rear of his Silverado.

The Webster man died at the scene of the crash. The child passenger was not injured, but two Bushnell adults, a woman, 43, and a man, 18, in the Toyota received minor injuries.
