BERESFORD, S.D. (KTIV) - Authorities are saying a dust storm along a major interstate contributed to 12 vehicles being involved in a crash in Southeast South Dakota
The state’s Department of Public Safety says the crash was located five miles north of the town of Beresford on Interstate 29. They say the crashes happened at about 5:20 p.m., when there was a dust storm in the area, creating “extremely limited visibility” around mile marker 54, just south of the Fairview exit.
Authorities say the 12 vehicles involved included:
3 semis
3 pickups
6 passenger cars
Occupants of three of the involved vehicles reported minor injuries, while no injuries were reported among the occupants of the nine other vehicles. According to authorities, alcohol and drugs were not factors in this crash.
I-29’s southbound lanes were completely closed for about an hour, followed by a single-lane closure for an additional hour.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash, and no charges have been announced.
