Driver dies after car stopped on I-95 in Newport is hit by tractor-trailer

NEWPORT, Maine (WGME) – Police say a New Hampshire man was killed in a crash involving a stopped vehicle and a tractor-trailer on I-95 in Newport.

Maine State Police say they got reports about a Chevrolet Volt stopped in the travel lane of I-95 in Newport around 11:35 p.m. on Tuesday.

While troopers were responding to the scene, the Chevrolet Volt was hit by a tractor-trailer.

Troopers say the car driven by 33-year-old Juan Guallpa of Lempster, New Hampshire, had been stopped in the northbound travel lane when it was rear-ended by a Freightliner tractor-trailer.

The impact pushed the car into the median. The tractor-trailer also went into median, where it rolled onto its passenger side and came to rest across both southbound lanes.

Guallpa died at the scene.

The driver of the tractor-trailer suffered minor injuries and was taken to Sebasticook Valley Hospital for treatment.

At this time, troopers say it remains unknown why Guallpa’s vehicle was stopped in the travel lane.
