STAMFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — A Connecticut State Police cruiser was struck on Route 15 in Stamford on Tuesday evening, causing the vehicle to burst into flames.
A state police cruiser was parked blocking Route 15 North near Exit 10 while responding to a fatal crash. The cruiser had its emergency lights activated, blocking both travel lanes.
Troopers had flares set in the road, alerting drivers to exit Route 15 before the closure.
State police said that despite the precautions, the driver of a 2023 BMW M340xi drove at a high rate of speed through the flare pattern and struck a CSP cruiser, which immediately burst into flames
The cruiser was unoccupied at the time of the crash.
The driver admitted to traveling faster than the speed limit. They were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
No enforcement action was taken on scene as the investigation remains pending.
