3 People Die, 4 Injured After Tesla Hits Overturned Semi-Truck and Marine Who Stopped to Assist

Three people died, and four others were injured after a Tesla crashed into an overturned semi-truck on a Florida highway. A passing motorist, later identified as a Marine who stopped to assist, is among the dead.

The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, May 31, just before 4 a.m. local time, when a 2014 Freightliner box truck drifted off the roadway near the Pine Ridge Road exit before swerving back and overturning, ABC affiliate WWSB, NBC affiliate WBBH and the Naples Daily News reported. As a result, two lanes of traffic were blocked.

Following the crash, the 31-year-old truck driver, who suffered minor injuries, exited the vehicle and a 25-year-old man in a BMW stopped to help, according to the reports.

That’s when a Tesla traveling south on the highway hit the underside of the semi and the 25-year-old man. The second crash left the two passengers in the Tesla — an 18-year-old and a 19-year-old — both dead at the scene, according to the reports. The driver of the BMW was critically injured and later died at a nearby hospital, the outlets reported.

The driver of the BMW has since been identified as Jonathan Garcia Arias, the District Twenty Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed to PEOPLE. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was known for his humor and selflessness, WWSB and CBS affiliate WINK reported.

The 20-year-old driver of the Tesla and two other passengers, ages 19 and 20, suffered serious injuries and were transported to an area hospital. The truck driver, who suffered minor injuries, was also transported for medical treatment.

An investigation is ongoing. The Florida Highway Patrol and the Collier County Medical Examiner’s Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.
