CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A three-vehicle crash on I-85 South killed a man after a tractor-trailer struck a vehicle that had stopped on the road following an earlier collision, state troopers said.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, around 1 a.m., two cars were both traveling on I-85 South when they collided near MM 78.
One of the vehicles came to rest off the shoulder, while the other vehicle stopped on the interstate.
Shortly after, a tractor-trailer carrying cartons of milk was traveling south and crashed into the vehicle that rested on the interstate, troopers said. The driver was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. The tractor-trailer went down an embankment and overturned, where all the milk spilled.
Interstate 85 South was closed for several hours. and it has since reopened.
The driver was identified as 35-year-old Evan Winston Johnson.
No known charges are pending at this time.
