MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas (KBTX) - A patrol vehicle was struck from behind during a traffic stop on I-45 on Tuesday, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident happened in the 29000 block of I-45 on May 13. A deputy had stopped a motorcycle and returned to the patrol vehicle to verify the driver’s information.
While the deputy sat inside the marked patrol vehicle with emergency lights activated, a Honda CR-V entered the HOV lane illegally and struck the patrol vehicle from behind, according to the sheriff’s office.
The collision caused significant damage to both vehicles. Traffic units responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for the crash investigation.
The deputy was evaluated at a local hospital and did not sustain serious injuries. Meanwhile, the motorcycle operator was not injured and was protected from the collision by the patrol vehicle’s position.
The driver of the Honda CR-V was identified as 24-year-old Abdulazeez Hassan. He was evaluated on scene by EMS and refused medical transport.
Hassan was determined to be intoxicated at the time of the crash, according to the sheriff’s office. He was taken into custody and charged with Driving While Intoxicated.
