AUBURN, Kan. (WIBW) - One person was seriously injured early Thursday when the sport utility vehicle he was driving struck a semitrailer that was parked on the shoulder of Interstate 335 along the Kansas Turnpike southwest of Topeka, officials said.
The crash was reported at 6:34 a.m. Thursday on southbound I-335 on the turnpike in Osage County. The location was about four miles southwest of Auburn, or 13 miles southwest of Topeka.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2016 Jeep Patriot was soutbound on I-335 when it veered off the roadway to the right and struck a 2023 Freightliner semitrailer that had broken down on the shoulder of the highway.
The driver of the Jeep, Aaron Larrea Sarabique, 34, of Elk City, was transported to Stormont Vail Hospital with serious injuries.
The patrol said Sarabique, who was alone in the Jeep, was wearing his seat belt.
The driver of the semi, Jose Alberto Acabal, 62, of Los Angeles, and a passenger, Antonio Martinez Martir, 66, of Los Angeles, were reported uninjured.
Neither was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash as the semi was parked, officials said.
