Motorcyclist critically injured after hitting disabled vehicle

DETROIT, MI – A 30-year-old man was critically injured early Sunday morning when his motorcycle struck a disabled vehicle blocking a lane, according to Michigan State Police.

Hours later, a suspected impaired driver crashed into a patrol car at the accident scene.

The Detroit Regional Communication Center was contacted about the motorcycle crash shortly after midnight Sunday on eastbound Davison Avenue, near Second Avenue.

When troopers arrived, they found the man on the ground near his downed motorcycle. The man was unresponsive but breathing. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

Investigators determined a previous crash had occurred when a vehicle lost control, struck the median wall and came to rest blocking the left lane of westbound Davison Avenue.

The motorcyclist was traveling in the left lane and was unable to avoid the blocking vehicle, subsequently striking it, police said.

While troopers were investigating the crash, another driver struck a fully marked patrol car that was blocking lanes to protect troopers working on the scene. The patrol car was unoccupied when it was hit, police said.

Troopers contacted the driver, who showed signs of impairment. The driver became combative during the arrest process and was taken into custody pending prosecutor review.

“This is the second day in a row that one of our patrol cars have been hit by an impaired driver,” said Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw. “Fortunately, no one was hurt in either crash. As I have said many times before, there is never a reason to drive impaired, ever.”
