BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. (WWSB) - Two people were killed early Sunday in a multivehicle crash involving a disabled commuter bus on Interstate 75 in Broward County that shut down all southbound lanes for nearly six hours, Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) said.
The crash happened about 2:18 a.m. Sunday on southbound I-75 near mile marker 26, according to FHP.
FHP said a 2001 Vanhool commuter bus was disabled and stopped in the outside lane of the interstate. The bus driver, a 75-year-old Doral man, was standing outside the vehicle before the crash.
Investigators said a 2024 Toyota Rav4 driven by a 59-year-old Port Charlotte man was traveling southbound in the outside lane when the driver failed to see the disabled bus and attempted to swerve left. The SUV’s right front struck the left rear of the bus before the vehicle spun and crashed into a guardrail.
A 2007 Honda Odyssey driven by a 45-year-old Miami man then approached the crash scene and attempted to swerve right, but the front of the minivan struck the rear of the bus, according to FHP. The Odyssey overturned and came to rest in the southbound travel lanes.
Troopers said a 2017 Nissan Rogue carrying four occupants also approached the crash area. The driver, a 49-year-old Fort Lauderdale man, attempted to steer onto the outside shoulder, but the vehicle struck the right rear of the bus and the bus driver standing nearby.
The bus driver and the driver of the Honda Odyssey were pronounced dead at the scene, investigators said.
The driver of the Toyota suffered non-fatal injuries. The driver of the Nissan and three passengers also suffered non-fatal injuries.
All southbound lanes of Interstate 75 at mile marker 26 were closed following the crash and reopened at 8:08 a.m., FHP said.
The crash remains under investigation.
