Woman Killed in Five-Vehicle Construction Zone Crash on US 77 in Milam County, Texas

A woman from Cameron, Texas was killed and several others were injured after a five-vehicle crash in a highway construction zone on US 77 in Milam County, Texas on May 11, 2026. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the collision occurred Monday morning near County Road 203 Loop during an active TxDOT pavement project where traffic had been reduced to one lane and controlled by construction flaggers and a pilot vehicle.

Investigators stated that eastbound traffic had been stopped as part of the roadway operation when a 2018 Dodge SUV approached the traffic queue and allegedly failed to control its speed before crashing into the rear of a stopped Chevrolet SUV. The impact triggered a chain-reaction collision involving three additional vehicles. Five individuals were transported to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Temple with injuries ranging from non-incapacitating to incapacitating. The driver of the Chevrolet later died from her injuries.

The incident highlights the serious dangers that can arise in highway work zones where traffic patterns change suddenly, lanes are narrowed, and drivers must quickly react to stopped or slowed vehicles ahead. Crashes in construction areas frequently involve high-impact rear-end collisions and multi-vehicle chain reactions because motorists may not recognize traffic slowdowns until it is too late to stop safely.

This fatal car crash remains under active investigation by DPS.
