Deputy struck during I-10 stop in Madison County, recovering

MONTICELLO, Fla. – A Madison County Sheriff’s Office deputy who was seriously injured Wednesday night after being struck during a traffic stop on Interstate 10 near the 250-mile marker, is expected to make a full recovery.

The crash happened June 25, 2026, at about 7:50 p.m. The deputy had stopped a vehicle traveling eastbound for a super speeder violation and was taking enforcement action when another vehicle traveling eastbound in the inside lane lost control, crossed both travel lanes and struck the deputy, the deputy’s patrol vehicle and the vehicle that had been stopped.

At the time of the crash, the driver of the stopped vehicle was standing near the front passenger side of the patrol vehicle, and the deputy had just exited the driver side of the patrol vehicle. The impact caused the patrol vehicle to shift, knocking the driver of the stopped vehicle down into a ditch. The deputy was knocked several feet forward into the stopped vehicle.

The deputy sustained serious injuries and was flown by helicopter to a Tallahassee-area hospital. As of the update, the deputy was undergoing surgery. The injuries were not considered life-threatening, and the deputy is expected to make a full recovery.

The driver of the stopped vehicle was taken by ambulance to Madison County Memorial Hospital, where he was evaluated and released. The driver of the vehicle that caused the crash and a passenger in the stopped vehicle were not injured.

Sheriff Harper and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office said they are thankful for the prayers and support they have received.
