Dunn, NC (June 23, 2026) - According to local reports and statements from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, one person died after a two-vehicle crash on Dorman Road near Arrowhead Road in the Dunn area late Tuesday night.
The crash was reported shortly before 11:30 p.m., with one account noting emergency crews were dispatched at 11:23 p.m. Authorities said the collision involved a 2006 Nissan Altima and a 2013 Cadillac XTS. A State Highway Patrol trooper came upon the crash while on patrol on Dorman Road between Arrowhead Road and Middle Road and began life-saving efforts before Dunn Emergency Services arrived.
Investigators said the Cadillac XTS had stopped partially in the westbound travel lane while facing west. Javin Lanel Wynn, 25, of Dunn, identified in one local account as Javin Lavel Wynn, had been a passenger in the Cadillac. Troopers said he stepped out and went to the trunk to retrieve an air compressor to inflate a partially deflated tire.
According to the preliminary investigation, 37-year-old Kristin Louise Gainey, of Erwin, was driving the Nissan Altima west on Dorman Road when the vehicle approached the stopped Cadillac. Reports state that the Nissan struck Wynn and then hit the rear of the Cadillac before both vehicles came to rest in the roadway. One account stated Wynn became trapped beneath the engine compartment of the Nissan after the impact.
Wynn died at the scene. The driver of the Cadillac, identified as Treyvon Stephenson, 25, of Dunn, and three other Cadillac passengers were treated at the scene and released. One report stated the Cadillac driver and front passenger had minor injuries, while two backseat passengers were not injured. All four people in the Cadillac were reported to have been wearing seatbelts.
Gainey was taken to Betsy Johnson Hospital with minor injuries. Local reports differed on whether passengers were also in the Nissan, with one account stating Gainey and three Nissan passengers were transported for treatment with minor injuries. Authorities also said Gainey was wearing a seatbelt.
Dorman Road was closed for more than two hours while emergency crews, troopers, and assisting officers responded to the scene. Dunn Emergency Services, including firefighters, rescue technicians, and paramedics, assisted after the crash, and Dunn police officers also responded to help emergency personnel and support people at the scene.
Troopers said impairment was suspected as a contributing factor in the crash, with one report citing suspected drug use and another referencing suspected intravenous drug use. Authorities said charges were pending against Gainey, including a possible felony death by motor vehicle charge. Troopers also said they planned to consult with the Harnett County District Attorney’s Office regarding charges. Local court records cited in reports stated Gainey had previously been cited earlier in June for driving without a license and not wearing a seatbelt, and that she had been out on bond on felony drug charges in Harnett County since January of the prior year.
