A Raleigh man is facing multiple charges after authorities said he lost control of his car on Interstate 87 and struck two people who were outside their vehicles, killing one of them.
According to Highway Patrol, the crash happened Sunday around 6:30 p.m. near mile marker 11 on I-87 southbound.
Wimandre Hendrick, 33, of Raleigh, was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Camaro when he lost control of the car, ran off the road and onto the shoulder. That’s when he struck two people standing outside a vehicle that had just been involved in a previous collision.
Derick Wright, 29, of Raleigh, died at the scene. He was standing outside his 2019 Ford Mustang on which was disabled on the shoulder of the road.
Dante Barnes, 33, of Wendell, had stopped his Honda CR-V to help Wright and was also struck by the Camaro. He was taken to WakeMed with life-threatening injuries.
Highway Patrol said Hendrick hit both men and both their vehicles.
He is charged with:
Involuntary manslaughter
Misdemeanor death by motor vehicle
Reckless driving resulting in serious injury
Exceeding a safe speed for conditions
No operator’s license
Expired registration
Expired inspection
Unsafe tires
Hendrick was taken to WakeMed in Garner for evaluation and will be taken to the Wake County Detention Center.
Highway Patrol said impairment is not suspected, but excessive speed and unsafe tires contributed to the crash.
I-87 reopened around 9:30 p.m.
