Driver sent to hospital with injuries after tractor trailer crash on I-81 in Augusta County

AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) - A tractor trailer driver was injured and taken to the hospital after a crash on Interstate 81 southbound on Tuesday morning, according to Virginia State Police.

VSP responded to a crash between two tractor trailers around 7 a.m. Tuesday on I-81 south near the 232.9 mile marker.

VSP’s preliminary investigation indicates one tractor trailer was disabled on the right shoulder with warning triangles deployed, and a second tractor trailer was changing from the left lane to the right lane when it entered the shoulder and hit the rear tandem axle of the disabled tractor trailer. After the collision, the second tractor trailer ran off the right side of the roadway and overturned into several trees, according to VSP.

The driver of the overturned tractor trailer was taken to Augusta Health with non-life-threatening injuries, while the driver of the disabled tractor trailer was not injured.

The crash closed part of I-81 southbound for a time Tuesday morning but the road has since reopened, according to VDOT.

This is a developing story. WHSV will provide updates on air and online as we learn more.
