Officer ‘in good spirits’ after cruiser hit on Ronald Reagan Highway

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WXIX) - A Colerain Township police officer is OK and “in good spirits” after his cruiser was hit Thursday on the Ronald Reagan Cross County Highway, the police chief says.

The officer was taken to a hospital in an ambulance after the 8:10 a.m. crash, treated and released.

Shortly before 11 a.m., Colerain Township Police Chief Ed Cordie said the officer was released from the hospital and “is in good spirits.”

Officers were originally called to the area for a dog on the road, according to Colerain Township police.

The officer was searching for the dog from inside the cruiser, with emergency lights activated on the westbound side of Ronald Reagan Highway.

Police say that while the officer was in the cruiser, the driver of another vehicle hit the cruiser from behind, forcing the striking vehicle through the cable barrier and onto the eastbound lanes of traffic.

The driver of the striking vehicle was not hurt, remained at the scene and is cooperating with officers, police said.

Both sides of the highway were closed between Colerain Avenue and Blue Rock Road for more than two hours before reopening about 10:30 a.m.

As of Friday morning, “charges have not been filed yet,” a township spokeswoman said.

The crash remains under investigation.

Anyone with information should call the Colerain Township Police Department at 513-321-COPS.
