Westbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway reopened in Gilbert on Sunday after a chain reaction crash forced a closure and left a woman dead.
The crash occurred at 11:06 a.m. just beyond the Higley Road overpass, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
According to DPS, a Volkswagen electric vehicle was stopped in the second lane from the left with mechanical issues when it was clipped by a Volkswagen Jetta. A Chevrolet pickup truck then struck the Jetta, killing a woman who was its sole occupant.
The collision shut down westbound travel less than 5 miles west of Mesa Gateway Airport.
Eastbound lanes were unaffected by the collision, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.
