Trey C. Flowers, of Milton, DE, was driving a Mack tractor-trailer south on the Turnpike’s eastern spur when the crash happened at milepost 112.4 in Secaucus at 9:01 a.m., New Jersey State Police Trooper II Christopher Postorino said.
A Peterbilt dump-trailer had become disabled while traveling south and was parked on the right shoulder, according to the preliminary investigation.
The Peterbilt driver got out of the vehicle and was standing outside it when Flowers’ Mack left the roadway to the right, entered the shoulder, and struck the rear of the unoccupied Peterbilt, Postorino said. The Mack continued forward and struck the Peterbilt driver, police said.
Flowers died in the crash, according to Postorino. The pedestrian suffered minor injuries and was taken to an area hospital.
Flowers’ mother, Amie, launched a GoFundMe in the wake of his death with a goal of raising $7,000. She said he was heading home at the time of the crash.
