DeWitt man dies following hit-and-run crash on I-69 after stopping to check mechanical issue

LANSING, Mich. (News 10) - Michigan State Police officials are asking for tips after a suspected hit-and-run crash on I-69 left a man seriously injured Friday afternoon.

MSP officials say the crash happened around 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25 on I-69 near M-100.

Officials say a 52-year-old man from DeWitt had pulled onto the shoulder of the expressway to check his trailer that was having some mechanical issues.

As he was checking his trailer, a car headed south on I-69 hit him and left the scene without stopping to check on the victim, according to MSP.

MSP officials said the victim was seriously injured and taken to University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. In an update Monday, authorities announced the man died Saturday.

Troopers investigating at the scene found vehicle parts from what is believed to be the suspect’s vehicle. Based on evidence recovered from the scene, troopers are requesting assistance from the public locating what they believe is a late model, 2017-2023 gray Jeep Compass SUV. The vehicle should have heavy front-right damage, according to MSP.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash, has seen the suspect’s vehicle or otherwise knows something about the crash is asked to call the MSP Lansing post at 517-322-1907.
