MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – A 24-year-old pedestrian died and a bystander who stopped to help was injured after two separate cars hit them near Ruby and Teutonia Monday night, Sept. 7, according to Milwaukee police.
Police say a car traveling south hit the pedestrian around 11:15 p.m. and fled the scene. A witness stopped to help the victim, and while doing so, a second car, also traveling south, hit both the witness and the pedestrian.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. She was identified by family Tuesday as Nora Winkels.
The 44-year-old witness was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the second car remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
Neighbors say people drive too fast all the time, and it’s not safe to cross Teutonia Avenue. They say it’s especially concerning as this happened in a school zone.
“The first car was gone. They didn’t even stop to see if she was okay,” said one neighbor. “They left.”
The neighbor came outside and saw another man trying to help.
“He was standing across the street, actually. He ran to her immediately.”
But seconds later, another car sped down the road, hitting the woman again and striking the good Samaritan with her.
“It’s no speed bumps or anything out here. I think they should at least put that, because they speed on this block right here. They do.”
Neighbors hope something will change before another tragedy happens here.
“Slow down, Milwaukee. We got to at this point. This was crazy.”
This isn’t the first time a pedestrian has been killed at this location. A 23-year-old woman was killed crossing the street on the exact same day four years ago, Sept. 7, 2022. That driver was arrested. And last August, a 66-year-old man died in a hit-and-run in the same area.
Police are still searching for the driver involved in the initial crash.
