A woman who got out of her car after a crash was killed on Highway 101 in San Jose, the California Highway Patrol said.
Driving a 2011 Nissan Juke around 11:30 p.m. Monday, she rear-ended a 2013 Toyota Prius driven by a 30-year-old man in the northbound lanes south of Oakland Road, the CHP said.
The cars were both disabled in the lanes of traffic, authorities said. The woman then exited her vehicle and was standing between the two disabled cars when a 2008 Toyota Camry driven by a 50-year-old woman collided with the Nissan. The driver of the Nissan was pinned between the cars and suffered fatal injuries. She was pronounced deceased at a local hospital.
The woman was identified as Maria Eslava, a 63-year-old San Jose resident, according to the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner.
The CHP said drugs or alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash.
The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with further information is asked to contact the CHP San Jose area office at 408-961-0900.
