PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A semi-truck driver was killed while attending to his broken-down vehicle on the shoulder of Interstate 84 on Monday, Oregon State Police said.
OSP responded to reports just before 9 a.m. of a fatal crash near milepost 278 in Union County.
Investigators said a tow truck driver stopped to assist 46-year-old Kevin Wesley Russell, whose semi-truck and trailer broke down on the westbound shoulder near North Powder.
According to officials, a separate semi-truck drove off the roadway, crashing into the broken-down semi-truck and hitting Russell, who was standing outside of his truck. Officers said Russell was dead at the scene.
First responders took the other semi-truck driver to the hospital with minor injuries.
According to officials, the tow truck driver did not report any injuries to police.
The crash is still under investigation.
