‘A gentle giant:’ Recent HS graduate struck and killed while changing tire on Eisenhower Expressway
An 18-year-old man who was struck and killed while changing a tire on the Eisenhower Expressway graduated from high school just one week prior, according to relatives. Erik Christopher Cox was one of two people who were killed at around 3 a.m. on Sunday in the westbound lanes of the expressway near Damen Avenue. Three others were injured, according to Illinois State Police. Cox’s legal guardian told NBC Chicago that his car broke down after a night in the city - and he was in the process of changing a tire when he lost his life.

A 21-year-old Texas woman was struck and killed be a pickup truck after her SUV became disabled on the 40 Freeway near Ludlow early Saturday, authorities said. The collision was reported about 2:10 a.m. on the westbound side of the remote stretch of freeway, according to CHP logs. About an hour earlier, authorities received a report that a Nissan SUV rental vehicle had become disabled and was stopped on the right-hand side of the roadway.

FOUR OAKS – A Johnston County man was killed early Friday morning after his disabled car was struck on the shoulder of Interstate 95. The collision was reported at 4:57am, near the 86 mile marker, just south of Keen Road. The Highway Patrol said a 2005 Kia Rio was traveling northbound when the right rear tire failed. The driver, Dannie B. Norris Jr., age 53, of Norris Lane, Benson, pulled onto the shoulder and stopped.

One woman was killed and three others were injured after a Brink’s truck collided with a disabled SUV on the Gold Star Bridge on Interstate 95 South in Groton on Friday evening. A Ford Edge was traveling southbound on I-95 around 6:42 p.m. on Friday just south of the Exit 83 on-ramp on the Gold Star Bridge when it experienced a “mechanical failure,” according to the Connecticut State Police. When the Ford came to a stop within the southbound travel lanes, a Freightliner cash-in-transit vehicle owned by Brink’s struck the rear end of the SUV, state police said.

PALO ALTO, Calif. - A driver whose car got disabled on the road died early Friday morning on a highway in Palo Alto after two other cars crashed into it, according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP log shows that the driver of a red Hyundai SUV crashed into a light pole about 3 a.m. on northbound US Highway 101 at San Antonio Road. Officer Sophie Lu said the driver called for help, but shortly afterward, two other vehicles hit the SUV.

LASALLE COUNTY, Ill. - An Ottawa man was struck and killed by a motorist on an Illinois highway earlier this month. Now, police are searching for the driver who fled the scene after the crash. At about 2:32 a.m. on May 10, Illinois State Police (ISP) responded to a fatal hit-and-run traffic crash on Illinois 251, approximately ¼ mile south of North 36th Road in Lasalle County. Jerome Johnson, 25, was involved in an earlier traffic crash where his vehicle came to a rest off the right side of the roadway.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) – A woman in a stalled vehicle was hit and killed in the Cypress area on Thursday morning, sparking hours of delays for drivers in the area. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the crash happened in the 22300 block of U.S. 290 near Telge Road. Houston TranStar first reported the crash at 5:47 a.m. Officials believe the woman was in her stalled vehicle when a larger pickup truck rear-ended her.

COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Canadian semi driver has been killed in a crash on eastbound I-94 Tuesday night in Comstock Township. The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office says the 57-year-old from Quebec hit several trees and jackknifed after sideswiping two passenger vehicles on the shoulder of the highway. The two vehicles were stopped to change a flat tire. Neither of those drivers were hurt. The crash happened near the 85.

ATLANTA - A man is dead after the car he was driving slammed into a disabled vehicle that was stopped on the right-hand side of the road near the intersection of Interstate 20 eastbound and Interstate 285. According to Atlanta police, the crash happened shortly after midnight May 29. Police say a 2013 Audi A 4 struck the back of a 2005 Ford Explorer. The male driver of the Audi was unresponsive when police arrived and was pronounced deceased at the scene despite efforts of Grady EMS personnel.

SPRINGFIELD, Michigan — Two people are injured after a bystander attempting to help a crash victim was hit by a passing vehicle, according to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies said around 10 p.m. on Tuesday they were called to a crash with a trapped driver at the intersection of W Dickman Road and 24th Street. While attempting to help with the crash, a bystander was hit by a bright green Dodge Charger which then fled the scene, deputies said.
