Passenger of Disabled Vehicle Struck, Killed by Big Rig in Claremont
A man was killed in a multi-vehicle crash Saturday when he was struck by a big rig on the San Bernardino (10) Freeway in Claremont. The crash occurred at 5:10 a.m. Saturday on the eastbound freeway just west of South Indian Hill Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol. A two-vehicle crash that closed part of Interstate 70 Thursday, paralyzing holiday traffic for hours, occurred when the driver of a 2021 Ram 3000 pickup truck driving west weaved onto the shoulder and struck the rear of a parked semi-truck, the Colorado State Patrol said. The crash was at mile marker 218 near the Eisenhower Tunnel just after 1 p.m. The Ram, which was hauling a trailer, spun and rolled once before bursting into flames, CSP Trooper Sherri Mendez said in an email Friday.

Initial reports indicate that an SUV rear-ended a semi-truck under unclear circumstances. The impact left the SUV disabled in the slow lane, while the semi-truck came to a stop on the right shoulder. Shortly after the first collision, a third vehicle struck the stationary SUV, compounding the scene and escalating the danger for all involved. Emergency crews arrived to find damaged vehicles scattered across the slow lane and right shoulder. One individual was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Delaware State Police are investigating a crash which killed a stranded motorist in Glasgow. 89-year-old Bernard Pinkett of New Castle was hit just after 5 a.m. this morning on Pulaski Highway near Biddle Avenue. Troopers say Pinkett’s car had broken down and he was trying to cross the road when he was hit. Pinkett was rushed to the hospital, but died. Pulaski Highway was closed for more than four hours for the investigation.

HARDING — A tow truck operator was killed Wednesday as he helped a driver with their broken down vehicle along the shoulder of Route 287. The death sparked outrage by coworkers, who hoped the preventable loss will bring more attention to a roadway safety law. State Police Sgt. Jeffrey LeBron said the tow truck was with a disabled Honda on the southbound right shoulder near Exit 31 (Route 124). A Jeep SUV then came down the shoulder and struck both vehicles and the tow truck operator, Daniel Ortiz, 24, of Hopatcong.

A Dumfries woman was struck and killed on Interstate 95 early Tuesday morning after her car apparently ran out of gas. State police said a 2012 Toyota Corolla was heading northbound on I-95 near the 152 mile marker near the Dumfries exit when the driver was “unable to avoid a pedestrian in the travel lane.” The pedestrian, Karen S. Rosa Hernandez of Dumfries, died at the scene. A gas can was located nearby, state police spokesman Matthew Demlein said in a news release.

California Highway Patrol says, just before 8:30 a.m., a street sweeper was apparently taking the southbound Highway 99 offramp to Lathrop Road just north of Manteca when it drove onto the shoulder. That’s when the street sweeper crashed into a tractor-trailer that was stopped in the shoulder area, officers say. The impact of the crash rotated the street sweeper back into traffic.
