Two drivers injured after SUV hits disabled vehicle on I-85 in Dinwiddie
Editor’s Note: The circumstances of the crash have been updated, per new information released by police. DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Two drivers are injured after police said an SUV hit a disabled vehicle on Interstate 85 North in Dinwiddie County Wednesday evening. At around 9:50 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 13, a disabled vehicle was stopped partially in the left lane on northbound I-85 in Dinwiddie County when it was hit on the rear passenger side by a Chevrolet Blazer, according to Virginia State Police.

According to NYSDOT, the incident happened in the parkway’s northbound lanes when a HELP truck operator had just pulled over to assist another driver. He was seconds away from stepping out of his truck when the approaching vehicle struck, severely damaging both vehicles. The operator was taken to a hospital with minor injuries and later released. “This could have ended much, much worse,” the DOT said on Tuesday, Aug. 12, noting the operator made it home to his family “because of timing — not because the other driver did the right thing.

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – A 36-year-old from Warren is facing felony charges in a deadly hit-and-run on west I-696 early Sunday. Authorities said Nateria Smith, a 29-year-old from Madison Heights, was struck by a vehicle while she was attempting to fill her car with a gas can just after 1 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 10. Investigators believe she was struck by a Chevrolet SUV that exited the freeway at Hoover Road.

SALT LAKE CITY — Three people were injured after a vehicle hit a semitruck on Interstate 80 in Tooele County, according to the Wendover Fire Department. At approximately 8:20 p.m. on Monday, a vehicle traveling westbound on I-80 near milepost 25 struck the rear of a semitruck that was parked on the right shoulder. The crash happened about 16 miles west of Knolls. The vehicle sustained significant damage, injuring all three occupants.

GRANBY, N.Y. — A Butler Disposal employee was killed by a vehicle on the job in the Town of Granby, New York State Police announced. State Police identified the deceased as Alexander M. Snow, 32, of Phoenix, N.Y. Troopers responded to a report of a crash involving a pedestrian on County Route 14 around 4:21 p.m. on Aug. 11. An investigation determined that a Butler Disposal garbage truck was stopped with its hazard lights facing southbound on the west shoulder of the roadway.

CLEVELAND — A 24-year-old service technician was airlifted to hospital after he was struck by a dump truck while working at the side of a Tuscarawas County highway, troopers said. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the technician was working on the left front tire of a disabled commercial truck on the southwest berm of U.S. Route 250 in Goshen Township. The man had parked his service truck and was working alongside the driver of the disabled vehicle, when a 2005 Sterling L8500 dump truck drifted over the fog line and hit the service technician.

The incident happened around 12:39 a.m. on Monday on the northbound lanes at milepost marker 21.7, just north of Exit 12 in Clarkstown, New York State Police announced. A preliminary investigation found that a 2009 Nissan was disabled while partially in the lane of travel and on the right shoulder with its lights off for unknown reasons. A 2014 Ford traveling north in the same lane rear-ended the Nissan, causing both vehicles to spin across all lanes and hit the median on the left shoulder, police said.

HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. — A Spring Hill woman was hit by a car and died after she stopped to check on an injured opossum on Sunday night. Florida Highway Patrol said on Aug. 10, around 10 p.m., a 31-year-old Spring Hill man was driving a Toyota Camry with his wife, a 27-year-old woman also from Spring Hill. The two were traveling on Hexam Road, east of Eskimo Curlew Road, when they stopped to check on an injured opossum.

ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. — A crash involving two tractor trailers closed westbound Interstate 64 in Washington Park Monday evening. Officials said the crash happened near Illinois 111 at mile marker 6. According to a preliminary crash report from Illinois State Police, a tractor-trailer car hauler struck the bridge and was stopped in the lane when it was struck by a second tractor trailer, which was hauling double trailers. Washington Park Assistant Fire Chief Ronnie Harris said two men were in one tractor trailer and a woman was in the other.

The driver of a semi truck was hospitalized Monday after his vehicle collided with a disabled car along northbound Interstate 39 in Woodford County. According to the Woodford County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to I-39 at mile marker 26 near Minonk at 9:01 a.m. Monday in response to a crash involving serious injuries. Calls to the sheriff’s office indicated that the semi rear-ended the car while it was parked on the shoulder of the interstate.
